![]() ![]() "Oxenfree II: Lost Signals is a fantastic follow-up to an excellent game that's sure to please fans of the first. "The final act aside, OXENFREE II: Lost Signals is an underwhelming experience, especially when compared to its predecessor." It has sharper horror, more inventive storytelling, and a variety of systems to keep you engaged through hours of slow and somber small-town exploration." "There are so many expectations to live up to after delivering the first Oxenfree, but Oxenfree II charts its own course, delivering something unlike Night School Studio's previous games. It's disappointing mostly because its strongest elements, from its dialogue to its excellent soundtrack (see 'Radio ga ga'), are packaged within a limp rerun of its superior predecessor, providing scant few reasons to face the ghosts of the past a second time." Night School is still capable of beautifully articulating complicated human emotions in its writing, with characters pondering existential questions such as how not to waste your time and how to make an impact with others, but Oxenfree II doesn't manage to make us care enough for its characters, and worse, even manages to sour us on parts of the first game in its attempts to connect the two. "Where Oxenfree had interesting relationships between its protagonists to uncover, Riley and Jacob lack the relationship history (and, let's be honest, the comfortable archetypes) that made the kids from part one such good company. "Oxenfree II: Lost Signals stumbles with a few of its characters but ultimately proves to be just as wonderfully creepy of an adventure as the first game." Better pacing, smoother controls, and more interesting gameplay ideas make it a worthy follow-up to the supernatural coming-of-age story that first graced our hearts seven years ago." It tells an excellent story with a cast of well-developed characters, and the smaller changes are what help define the sequel. ![]() "While Oxenfree II: Lost Signals isn't an overhaul compared to its predecessor, it didn't need to be. ![]() "Well-written characters and a tense atmosphere set the right tone, but the signals of this Oxenfree sequel feel garbled compared to the original." "Oxenfree 2 is a more mature second run at the walk-and-talk formula." Frankly, if I could, I'd give this game some kind of award.Opencritic | Metacritic Right now you can pick it up over at Google Play, and I'd encourage anyone that might be into adventure games, an 80's aesthetic, or generally good narrative to take a look. Though the game is $5, that's $15 off what it normally is on Steam, and I think it's definitely worth it. Even as an AP writer I don't switch devices enough for it to make a difference for me in a replay-oriented game, but YMMV. Keep in mind, though, that it doesn't support any cloud save systems, though it does connect to Google Play Games. As someone who almost always avoids playing games on a phone unless they are a mobile exclusive, I think I could handle it if I were to only play Oxenfree on Android. The controls also work well, and might actually be better suited to a touchscreen than a mouse or controller. At least the differences won't be too noticeable if you play on a phone, given the smaller display. ![]() I will say, the visual quality of the game isn't quite as good on Android as it is on PC or console. ![]()
